TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"American Masters: F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams," 9 p.m., PBS. When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote of the Jazz Age he seemed to fit New York society perfectly. He was a Princeton grad, handsome and well-spoken with a beautiful and high-spirited wife. Still, he felt inauthentic. He was from St. Paul, Minn., where his family's finances declined after his father lost his job. He had never mixed well with the old-money East of the Ivy League. His life soon declined. He drank heavily and fought with his wife, Zelda, who had nervous breakdowns and was institutionalized. "I am a forgotten man," he wrote in 1940, the year he would die of a heart attack at 44. Instead, he would be remembered for generations. In 1940, the Modern Library had dropped his "Great Gatsby" because of weak sales. In 1998, that group's board called it the second-best novel of the 20th century, trailing only James Joyce's "Ulysses." In 2000 alone, it sold 300,000 copies. This 2001 documentary offers a rich and elegant portrait, ranging from interviews to excerpts read by Amy Irving, Campbell Scott and Laura Linney.
