Tips from the Co-op America Foundation to help you live greener, healthier:

  • Clean your drains better without toxic, corrosive chemicals. Try a plunger or a snake as a first resort. To keep your drains open, pour 1/4 cup baking soda, then 1/2 cup white vinegar after that. Cover the drain, then repeat.

  • Clean the toxins out of the air in your house with house plants.

  • Clean hard surfaces with a natural disinfectant: Mix 1/2 cup Borax and 1/2 cup vinegar. Add water to dissolve the Borax.

    KEEP IT SIMPLE

    MATTIE'S LEGACY

Mattie J.T. Stepanek taught by example. He had established himself as a poet, peace activist and best-selling author by the time he died from a rare form of muscular dystrophy at age 13.

"Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait Through Heartsongs" (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $16.95) compiles his poetry. Proceeds benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In these poems, Mattie explored disability and despair, but also the gifts he found in simple things, like nature and prayer.

    FINAL WORD

"Even the most chronically disorganized people can change their behavior with the right motivation and a little self-discipline. It requires some effort, but it is simple once you learn to take control of clutter."
