The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team needed seven extra minutes to start the new season with a win.

Hawai'i defeated George Mason, 2-1, in overtime in its season opener at the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Junior defender Krisha Kai scored the winner off a corner kick by junior midfielder/forward Adria Campbell seven minutes into the first overtime period.

"I hit (Natasha Kai's) nose with my head, and I guess the ball ricocheted off her, and I flicked it with the outside of my right foot," Krisha Kai said.

Hawai'i continues the tournament against Brigham Young Monday at 5 p.m. BYU plays George Mason, winner of the 1985 NCAA Championship, tonight at 7.

"I was aiming for (Natasha Kai) and she and the defender collided, and it took a freak bounce," Campbell said.

Senior forward Natasha Kai scored the first goal in the 65th minute off a pass from sophomore midfielder Jessica Domingo, who sent a long ball into open space on the right side of the field for Kai to chase down. A defender challenged Kai, and she cut the ball back to her left foot, and sent the ball sailing past goalkeeper Olivia Brown from about 15 yards out.

"Coach told us we were 10 times faster, and any through ball, we were going to beat them," Natasha Kai said.

George Mason's Danielle MacDonald tied the match in the 83rd minute, when her corner kick from the right side curled into the goal, and freshman goalkeeper Kori Lu couldn't punch the ball out.

"I'm disappointed, this is the weakest we played for maybe six months," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "I'm disappointed we missed so many goals. We didn't open the game up. When we did move the ball, we attacked down the flanks beautifully."

Natasha Kai had a chance about two minutes into overtime when she chased down a long ball from freshman forward Aimee Cohen, but Brown blocked her shot. Kai had another chance on a long ball from Campbell a minute later, but Brown broke up the play.

"It's a great thing that we're getting the opportunities," Domingo said. "We knew we had the upperhand speed-wise, so we tried to utilize Tasha's speed."

In regulation, Natasha Kai almost scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute when she chased the ball down on the left side of the field and sent a long ball to the far side of the net, but Brown knocked it off the crossbar.

"It's frustrating, having so many opportunities," Kai said. "Coach told me to keep taking shots, and eventually one would go in."
