Two of the nation's top experts on the securities industry will join Sen. Daniel Akaka and state Securities Commissioner Corinna Wong in two free forums on O'ahu and Maui next week. Robert Glauber, NASD chairman and chief executive officer, and Mary L. Schapiro, NASD's vice chairman and president of Regulatory Policy and Oversight, will participate in the forums, sponsored by NASD, the leading private-sector regulator in the U.S. securities industry, with co-sponsors, the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Hawai'i Council on Economic Education and Sen. Daniel Akaka. The discussions are intended to help interested Hawai'i consumers understand securities investing and discuss recent regulatory developments and issues in the financial services. Akaka will provide an overview of congressional actions taken to deal with recent financial services problems. Wong will discuss the latest enforcement issues. "PODCASTING STEP-BY-STEP," a hands-on creation of a podcast — including tips on uploading the audio file, creating a post for it in a blog and finally subscribing and listening to the just-created show — is scheduled noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow, sponsored by the University of Phoenix. "RESOURCES FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS." A series of free workshops for the prospective or existing small-business owner will be presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Hawai'i Women's Business Center, 9-10:30 a.m. tomorrow and Aug. 30; and 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday, all at the Small Business Resource Center, 1041 Nu'uanu Ave., Suite A. Topics will include business planning and feasibility, technical assistance, government contracting programs and financial management and assistance. Earle Ifuku of Hawaiian Electric Co. will discuss current technology, industry developments and HECO's initiatives in developing Broadband over Power Lines — an "intelligent electric grid of the future," capable of transmitting high-grade, higher frequency, voice communications over utility power lines — in a discussion Wednesday, sponsored by the University of Phoenix. Joining him in the discussion will be Ed Drew, of CURRENT Technologies. A special six-week Big Island Macintosh Learning Series, sponsored by the Hawai'i Mac Nuts computer user group, will kick off Wednesday with an overview of the new Tiger version of Macintosh System 10. Tax-exempt compliance regulations for tax-exempt organizations will be the focus of a one-day Seminar on Non-Profit Organizations, sponsored by Chaminade University and the Chaminade University Tax Foundation. The event, open to the public, will be held 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom. It is intended for non-profit organization officers, directors, members and managers, and their accountants or attorneys.
