A fisherman who died after he was pulled unconscious from waters off Kahala Beach Park Thursday night has been identified as Sam Akamine.
Police said Akamine, 50, was fishing with two other men when he was swept out to sea. Akamine's two companions went into the water to look for him and one of them got into trouble.
One of the men made it back to shore and called for help. A fire helicopter spotted the second man and brought him safely to shore at about 8:30 p.m.
A short while later the helicopter crew spotted Akamine floating about 150 yards off shore. He died at The Queen's Medical Center shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, police said.
