Pepe'ekeo man dies in collision

HILO — A 57-year-old Pepe'ekeo man died yesterday in a head-on collision on Hawai'i Belt Road fronting the 'Alae Cemetery.
Judy P. Gamiao was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center at 10:25 a.m., police said.
Police, who were called to the scene at 8:08 a.m., reported that a southbound 1990 Toyota pickup truck crossed the highway center line and collided with the 1994 Mazda pickup truck Gamiao was driving.
The 25-year-old Hilo man driving the Toyota was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. A 15-year-old boy who was a passenger in Gami-ao's truck was treated for minor injuries and released.
KAHALA
FISHERMAN FOUND UNCONSCIOUS
A fisherman was in critical condition last night after he was pulled unconscious from the water off Kahala Beach Park.
The man, in his late 40s or early 50s, was fishing with two other men when he became separated from the group. The other men went into the ocean to search for him and they, too, became separated, said Capt. Emmit Kane, Fire Department spokesman.
One of the two made it back to shore, but couldn't find his companion, Kane said. The man called the Fire Department at about 7:40 p.m. and an air-and-ground search was launched, Kane said.
At about 8:30, fire officials found the second man about 150 yards offshore and he was airlifted to safety. Kane said the man was not seriously injured.
About 10 minutes later, the missing man was found floating below the water's surface and brought to shore. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

CONSTRUCTION DUE FOR KCC CENTER
PUHI — Construction on the $10 million first phase of Kaua'i Community College's one-stop center should begin soon and be complete in August 2006.
Gov. Linda Lingle has released construction funds for the center, which she said will consolidate scattered student services functions at the college into one location. The 33,000-square-foot, two-story structure will also relieve crowding, said college chancellor Peggy Cha.

About 30 families who have or are experiencing a life-threatening illness will attend HUGS annual Celebration of Life at Sea Life Park tomorrow.
HUGS is a locally founded organization that offers free services to families who face overwhelming adversity.
The event is underwritten by Prudential Locations Foundation.
WAHIAWA
FENCE AT GYM NEARS COMPLETION
Construction of a perimeter fence at Whitmore Community Park Gym in Wahiawa is expected to be completed by the end of September.
The project, which also includes installing a metal cattle gate, is designed to prevent vehicles from speeding through the gym's parking lot, said City Council chairman Donovan Dela Cruz.
