WAILUKU, Maui — Vicki Eto of Maui, whose struggle with a deadly blood disease inspired hundreds to sign up as potential bone marrow donors, died Monday. She was 47.

Eto's friends organized a number of successful events on behalf of the Hawai'i Bone Marrow Registry at the St. Francis Medical Center after she was diagnosed in September 2003 with myelodysplastic syndrome, which can lead to acute leukemia. Eto underwent chemotherapy, blood transfusions and other treatments, but no donor match was found before she died.

Eto was a tumor registrar at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

She leaves her husband, Keenan; her children, Zachary and Zoe; and a sister, Apryle Kashiwabara.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. today at Nakamura Mortuary, continuing at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Kahului Union Church, with a service at 2 p.m. and a reception to follow. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Maui Memorial Park. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.
