The 11th annual Ko Olina Taste at Kapolei will be held Sept. 18 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Ko Olina Resort & Marina (Ulua Lagoon). The benefit is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kapolei and helps raise scholarship money for West O'ahu students and funds for community groups.

SLACK-KEY GUITARIST WILL PERFORM FREE AT LIBRARY

Danny Carvalho, a 19-year-old slack-key guitarist and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee, will perform Saturday in the Hawai'i State Library lobby at 11:45 a.m. Admission is free. CANOE CLUB HOSTING ALOHA AINA RECYCLING EVENT JUNE 12

Hui Nalu Canoe Club is holding its fifth annual Aloha Aina recycling event June 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hui Nalu hālau, which is next to the Hawai'i Kai boat ramp off Kalaniana'ole Highway. Items brought for recycling will be redeemed by Hui Nalu Canoe Club and the proceeds will go to helping the club.

"Aloha Aina is a great opportunity to clean out your garage, your closets, your attic and to rid your business of old equipment that's been collecting dust," said Cathy Ho, a coach at Hui Nalu who is helping organize the event. "It's also a responsible way to dispose of these items while helping out a great cause."

ST. FRANCIS VALEDICTORIAN HAS GIVEN 838 HOURS TO CHARITY

For more than three decades, St. Francis School has required its students to devote at least 100 hours to community service to graduate. But to class of 2010 valedictorian Francesca "Frankie" Koethe, community service was more of a passion than a requirement.

Koethe put in 838 hours for the March of Dimes during her four years at the school. Koethe, who will study marine biology at the University of Hawai'i with the help of several scholarships, is co-chair of the MOD youth chapter for Hawai'i.

BIKE PATH CLEANUP EARNS GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD

The fourth annual Good Neighbor Awards recognized more than 50 volunteer leaders and partners in the city's Department of Environmental Services Storm Water Quality program for exceptional volunteer service to protect O'ahu's waters. One of the groups recognized at Thursday's ceremony was Kapakahi Adopt-A-Stream's Pearl Harbor bike path cleanup, which drew more than 500 volunteers in April.
