Driver faces reduced charges

Advertiser Staff

A 59-year-old Kailua woman who was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of attempting to run over a police officer was charged yesterday with the less serious crime of terroristic threatening.

Ellen M. Endo also was charged with third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $100,000.

Endo initially was booked on one count of first-degree attempted murder because she allegedly tried to kill a law enforcement officer. A conviction would have meant a mandatory prison term of life without the possibility of parole.

Police said an undercover officer and her partner saw a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Nu'uanu church about 9 p.m. Monday and that the woman driving the car appeared to be engaged in a drug transaction. One of the officers approached the driver's side of the car, announced that she was a police officer and showed her badge, police said.

Police said the driver put the car in reverse and twice drove at the officer, coming within 3 feet of her the second time.

The officer drew her gun, but the car left the parking lot via a second exit, police said.

Both officers were able to get the license number. Endo was arrested at her Humu'ula Street home at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday.
