HONOLULU — Hawaii is paying cash rebates to residents who buy new electric cars or upgrade their refrigerators.
State leaders announced Thursday that the programs will use federal stimulus money to provide rebates up to $4,500 available for new, highway-capable electric vehicles and $250 for new refrigerators.
In addition, a $500 rebate is available for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle chargers.
These programs are designed to provide economic incentives for customers to switch to more efficient cars and refrigerators that decrease reliance on foreign oil.
The refrigerator program was compared to the popular 2009 Cash for Clunkers initiative, which rewarded people for replacing gas-guzzling vehicles with more fuel-efficient models.
