New North-South Road now open on Ewa plain named Kualakai Parkway

Advertiser Staff

The final phase of the new North-South Road between Kapolei and 'Ewa was dedicated today and also got a new name — Kualakai Parkway.

Kualakai traditionally was meant to unite new people in a new land and Department of Transportation director Brennon Morioka said today in a statement that “the road is intended to unite and provide further connectivity for the Ewa/Kapolei region as well as provide a new gateway for growth.”
Previously, the choice for motorists was limited to taking a congested Fort Weaver Road to H-1 Freeway. Now commuters can tool along a less-crowded Fort Weaver Road to the freeway. Or, they can skip Fort Weaver altogether and take Kapolei Parkway to either the freeway or Farrington Highway.
The road includes a new interchange and a four-lane highway that spans from Kapolei Parkway, Farrington Highway and H-1 Freeway. It finally was completed after more than four years of construction and $155 million in costs.
The North-South Road is scheduled to officially open at 4 p.m. today. Special-duty officers will be on site as drivers familiarize themselves and transition onto the new road.
