WIE TO PLAY IN ASIA
Hawai'i's Michelle Wie will take her textbooks from Stanford to Thailand and Singapore this month to play in the LPGA's season-opening events.
The Punahou graduate, now taking 20 units in Stanford's winter quarter, plans to play in both the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand, Feb. 18 to 21 in Chonburi, and the HSBC Women's Champions, the following week in Singapore.
Wie, who won her first professional tournament in November, moved up to ninth in this week's Rolex World Rankings. The Top 10 will all be in Singapore, which has a 63-player limited field. Wie will be joined by Lorena Ochoa, Jiyai Shin, Suzann Pettersen, Anna Nordvqist, Cristie Kerr, Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Ai Miyazato and Angela Stanford.
Wie's quarter ends just before the LPGA opens in the U.S. the end of March. She plans to play the LPGA Classic Presented by J Golf in Carlsbad, Calif., the week before the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The year's first major is April 1 to 4.
Kā'ANAPALI RANKS
Kā'anapali Golf Resort is the only Hawai'i property in Golf World's "100 Best Golf Shops" listing. The 25th annual collection of private, resort, public and off-course golf shops appears in the Feb. 1 issue.
Eight shops have appeared on the list all 25 years: Medinah, TPC Sawgrass, Hillandale, Doral Golf Resort and Spa, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Haggin Oaks and Carl's Golfland. Thirty new shops were added this year — the largest turnover since 1997.
To be considered for the annual list, golf shops submitted entries to the magazine. Winning shops were chosen based on three criteria: revenue per square foot and per round of golf played compared with shops in the same category; appearance of layout and product displays, and; evaluation of a shop's successful promotions and initiatives within the last year.
