96-year-old Maui man dies, 4 injured in 4-vehicle crash
A 96-year-old driver from Pukalani, Maui, died yesterday morning after he was involved in a four-vehicle collision on Haleakalā Highway that sent four people to Maui Memorial Medical Center, Maui police said.
Masami Nikaido was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial.
He was driving a 2004 Toyota Echo that was rear-ended by a 2002 Ford E150 van traveling east on Haleakalā Highway near Keāhua Junction in Kahului.
The driver of the Ford E150, a 47-year-old woman from Kahului, sent Nikaido's Echo crashing into the rear of a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by a 56-year-old woman from Kāne'ohe.
The Sentra then collided into the rear of a 2010 Toyota Tacoma truck driven by a 24-year-old man from Kahului.
Nikaido's death is the sixth traffic fatality in Maui County this year, compared to seven at the same time last year.
