A small group of parent protesters continued their round-the-clock sit-in in Gov. Linda Lingle's office this morning, hoping for a quick resolution to public school furloughs, which began in October.

The protest is now in its sixth day, coming off a weekend in which parents held continuous vigil outside of Washington Place. The sit-in began last Wednesday in Lingle's office, but then moved across the street on Saturday morning because of lack of bathroom access over the weekend.

Meanwhile, today is the deadline set by Rep. Marcus Oshiro, chairman of the House Finance Committee, to use money from the Hurricane Relief Fund to restore the four remaining furlough days in the current school year.

Oshiro has said that he will push the deadline back to Wednesday to allow the governor, Hawaii State Teachers Association and state Board of Education to come to an agreement on how to end the furloughs in the current year.

If no agreement is reached by then, Oshiro has said, the state Legislature will likely only be able to appropriate money to restore the 17 furlough days in next year's school calendar.
