Shelle Shimizu, a Mililani High School graduate now enrolled at Macalaster College, has been named a Truman Scholar for 2010.

Shimizu, a junior majoring in political science and Asian studies, is one of 60 students from 54 U.S. colleges and universities to earn the scholarship.

Shimizu will be a Public Policy and International Affairs fellow at Princeton University this summer, after which she plans to serve in the Peace Corps. She hopes to pursue a law degree and Masters in Public Policy at Columbia University.

A news release from Macalaster College says Shimizu, who is currently studying abroad in China, eventually hopes to work both domestically and internationally to alleviate poverty.

Each Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate study. Recipients also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at top graduate schools.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as a federal memorial to President Harry S. Truman.

There have been 2,730 Truman Scholars selected since the first awards were made in 1977.
