Firefighters raise a flag at the World Trade Center in the midst of the rubble that was once the World Trade Center.
Associated Press
Introduction

On Sept. 11, 2001, the bloodiest day in American history, terrorist attacks killed thousands of people in the nation's political and financial centers, crippled the airline industry and shook America's sense of safety.

Struggling to fathom the horrible tragedy, Americans came together to mourn the victims, to honor the heroes who fell during rescue attempts, and to prepare for a war of a new kind.

For full coverage of the impact on Hawai'i and the rest of the world, turn to The Advertiser as we report on the unfolding story of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
