Showing your potential

"We know what we are, but we know not what we may be." –– SHAKESPEARE.

Aloha from Hawai'i, Angie. We never know what our potential is until we try and conquer! How fortunate you are to experience this first hand. My daughter, Kailey, was fortunate enough to get to know you during the rehearsals for the Miss Hawai'i Pageant this past summer and to ask you your on stage question, "If I had a bad day at school, what would you do to cheer me up?"

Your answer was not only perfect because Kailey is the only girl and would love a sister. She loves to play dress up and would love to "dress up like a queen." It was also perfect because you represented what you believe in.

Character education. You showed her TRUST, by holding onto her hand and telling her, "don't be afraid; just keep your eyes on me," before you went on stage. You shared your SPIRIT with her by teaching her how to do some steps to the Latin music that was playing during rehearsals, and you made her FEEL SPECIAL by acknowledging her each time you saw her. You also showed COMPASSION by looking her in the eye and talking in a low soothing voice when you answered the question on stage. I know that all of the positive encounters Kailey experiences are "character building blocks" that will make her a better person and will want her to do the same for others. You truly epitomize what your platform is, and I know that you will have an impact on many people and make a difference in many lives.

In school, Kailey is studying Washington and presidents. She asked me if she could see the president if we visited the White House. I explained to her that we can visit the White House, however, the president will only see important people who hold a high position in government. She replied, "I can visit the President!! I know Miss America, and she's high in government!!"
I think she just gained CONFIDENCE.

Hope to see you on your brief visit back in Honolulu.

Aloha,
Sharon Dias Kaneshiro

Coach Angie remembered

Hi, Coach Angie :):

I just wanted to say congrats on winning Miss America!  I'm away at college right now and I found out so late that you won, but when I did I was so proud and excited!  If you don't remember, I was on the JV basketball team that you coached my sophmore year at Moanalua.  You were helping Coach Ivan that year!  I always thought you were such a beautiful person, and a great coach :)  I'm so glad to hear that you are a teacher at Holy Family now, also.  Good luck in the future and have fun this year :)

God Bless,
Leah Peterson

Holy Family Catholic Academy cheers Angie

Dear Angie,

Our family would like to congratulate you on your success at the Miss America pageant!! We were in attendance at Holy Family Catholic Academy cheering you on throughout the night of the pageant. Katie and Mark were very fortunate to have had you as their coach for the past few years! You are such a wonderful role model for the children of Holy Family and now you will be able to reach out and touch the children of our glorious nation. I can truly say from a personal viewpoint that you truly do represent all that is right in America. Thank you for everything you always do and our best wishes for a memorable year as the new Miss America. We will miss you, but know that you are still here in all of our hearts.

Aloha,
Mary Johnson

You made us proud

Angela,

A huge CONGRATULATIONS on winning the crown in Atlantic City!! I am currently residing in Massachusetts (for sure temporarily, I can't wait to get home to Hawai'i) and watched the competition with only Miss Hawaii on my
mind. I am truly proud to call Hawai'i home. You made the whole state proud and you should be commended for that. You showed that you have grace,
humility and the true aloha spirit.

I am also truly proud of you because by winning the title you became the first Asian-American to win the crown. I am of part-Filipino ancestry and could not be more proud to be a Filipino than right now.

Again, congratulations and make Hawaii proud throughout your reign as Miss America 2001!

Anthony Vidinha
