Amid the hundreds who gathered at Kapi'olani Park yesterday for a brief glimpse of Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, perhaps none appreciated the bittersweet implications the imperial visit would have for Japanese-Americans in Hawai'i more than 70-year-old Helen Wadahara.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Punchbowl cemetery during their Hawai'i visit next month, the Japanese government announced yesterday. They will also attend a banquet at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and visit Kapi'olani Park, but are not scheduled to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, according to the official itinerary.
