Japan's royal couple watched Hawai'i-style cattle roping yesterday before returning to their homeland after a two-week tour of Canada and Hawai'i.

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid homage to America's veterans under rainy skies at Punchbowl cemetery yesterday morning, then wrapped up their second day in Honolulu at a 1,500-person banquet for a scholarship named in honor of Akihito 50 years ago.

Amid the hundreds who gathered at Kapi'olani Park yesterday for a brief glimpse of Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, perhaps none appreciated the bittersweet implications the imperial visit would have for Japanese-Americans in Hawai'i more than 70-year-old Helen Wadahara.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko yesterday asked students from Rainbow Gakuen what grades they were in and what their favorite subjects were during a visit to Kapi'olani Park, the royal couple's only public appearance during their visit to Hawaii.

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko arrived at Hickam Air Force Base just before 3 p.m. on their first visit to Honolulu in 15 years.

School children greeted Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at Kapi'olani Park, revisiting the area where Akihito had planted a shower tree in 1960.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Punchbowl cemetery during their Hawai'i visit next month, the Japanese government announced yesterday. They will also attend a banquet at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and visit Kapi'olani Park, but are not scheduled to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, according to the official itinerary.
