UH graduate is new 3rd Brigade commander

Col. Richard C. Kim took charge of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team this morning in a change of command ceremony at Schofield Barracks.

He replaces Col. Walter E. Piatt, who has led the brigade for seven years, including tours to the Middle East.

Kim is a 1988 University of Hawai'i graduate and has distinguished himself in Iraq.

He is returning to his home after 22 years with his wife, Un Hui, and three children.

Piatt is moving to Washington to become a fellow at Georgetown University.

The 3rd Brigade is part of the Army's 25th Infantry Division.
