Death investigated after body found in house fire

Hawai'i County police and fire inspectors were investigating the death of a man whose burned body was found during a house fire in Pāhoa on Wednesday night.

Fire crews were dispatched to 14-801 Cholet Circle in Nanawale Estates at 11:16 p.m. and found the body on a living room sofa.

A county news release said someone called 911 and told a dispatcher that an invalid who was unable to walk was trapped in the house.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The man's identity was not disclosed.

Firefighters said heavy smoke was pouring from the house when they arrived at 11:25 p.m. The fire, confined to the living room, was under control by 11:30 and declared extinguished at 11:45.

Damage to the single-story wood house was estimated at $125,000.
