Associated Press

FARMINGTON, Conn. — Sports painter Donald Francis Moss, who painted covers and editorial illustrations for Sports Illustrated, Good Housekeeping and other magazines, has died of natural causes. He was 90.

His daughter, Margaret Moss Painter, says he died Tuesday at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Moss illustrated Super Bowl posters, aerial ski maps and ski runs, art for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, postage stamps, the New York City Marathon and U.S. Tennis Open. He also painted sports greats Ted Williams and Jack Nicklaus.

Moss served for four years in the Marine Corps, landing at Guadalcanal in 1942. He documented and mapped the campaign in the South Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hardesty Moss, a son, two daughters and five grandchildren.
