HPU loses in NCAA II West Regional baseball title game, 9-4

UC San Diego scored seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-4 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in the championship game of the NCAA Division II West Region Baseball Tournament at Compton, Calif.

The Sea Warriors, who were making their tournament debut, finished their season 39-12. UC San Diego (51-7) advances to the double-elimination championship finals May 22-29 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

HPU scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Bas Nooij. But UC San Diego scored seven runs on six hits in the fifth inning to take control.

Earlier yesterday, Hawai'i Pacific rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth — including a three-run homer by Bas Nooij — to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-4, to advance to the championship game.

Danny March pitched three innings for the victory, allowing no hits, striking out four and walking one.

CS Dominguez Hills went out to a 4-0 lead before HPU scored its first run on an RBI groundout by Tyler Davis in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Blake Amaral hit an RBI single before Nooij hit his three-run homer to left field.

CS Dominguez Hills stranded a runner at third with Kyle Pond striking out for the final out in the ninth.
