The Hawai'i Pacific University softball team will host one of two NCAA Division II West Regionals this week, the NCAA announced yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (41-6), the Pacific West Conference champion, will host the four-team regional Friday through Sunday at Howard A. Okita Field in Kāne'ohe.

"It's the first time that any school in Hawai'i has hosted a regional, so it's a good thing for us," HPU coach Bryan Nakasone said. "Even the (Division I-University of Hawai'i) has been shut out when it comes to hosting in the postseason, so we think that this is a great opportunity. It's a nice reward for the kids. They've played hard and they earned it."

HPU is the top seed and faces No. 4 Central Washington (37-13) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Hawai'i-Hilo (35-14) is seeded third and plays No. 2 Cal State Monterey Bay (32-18) at 11 a.m. on Friday.

HPU lost once to both Central Washington and Cal State Monterey Bay this season. Hilo also lost a game to Cal State Monterey Bay. HPU and Hilo split their four-game series this season.

The 16 regional winners will advance to the Super Regionals on May 21 and 22. The finals will be held May 27 to 31 in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Sea Warriors (37-10) are the fourth seed and play No. 1 UC San Diego (48-7) on Thursday at 11 a.m. HST at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (40-18) is seeded second and Cal State Chico (35-18) is third. The double-elimination regional runs through Sunday.

"The wait is over and we are finally in," HPU head coach Garett Yukumoto said. "I am excited now to look ahead and study up on the other three teams in the tournament. It's just a great feeling for the coaches and players, but we need to get ready now for the task at hand."
