Concerted effort douses Sunday morning brush fire

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters doused a brush fire that broke out Sunday morning along Hawai'i Belt Road, between mile markers 22 and 23, in the Pu'uanahulu area, West Hawaii Today reported.

The blaze, reported at 10:16 a.m., burned about half an acre of dry pasture land. A volunteer fire unit from Pu'uanahulu was first on scene, receiving assistance from nearby ranchers and quickly controlling the fire, said West Hawai'i Battalion Fire Chief Marshall Luke.

Firefighters from Waikoloa, Waimea and Kailua also responded. Old Hawaiian rock walls helped contained the blaze, acting as a fire break and preventing it from spreading further. The blaze was extinguished about 11 a.m.
