Friends of Iolani Palace receives honor

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The Friends of Iolani Palace says it is the first group in Hawaii to be named a Preserve America Steward.

The group's executive director, Kippen de Alba Chu, said Monday that a certificate of designation signed by first lady Michelle Obama provides national recognition.

The organization quoted Obama as saying Preserve America Stewards are committed to preserving America's diverse physical and cultural heritage.

De Alba Chu says the day-to-day dedication of the group's staff and volunteers plays a critical role in preserving and perpetuating the palace for future generations.

Built in 1882 by King Kalakaua, Iolani Palace is the only official residence of royalty in the United States.
