One woman died and another is in fair condition following a single-vehicle crash early this morning on Kaukonahua Road in the Wahiawa direction.

According to police, the two women were in a Ford Explorer heading north at 2:36 a.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle at the S-turn of the road. The vehicle crossed the roadway, collided with a guardrail on the right, then flipped over before coming to a stop.

The driver, a 28-year-old Waialua woman, was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, a 21-year-old woman from Aiea, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in fair condition.

The road was closed following accident and reopened around 7 a.m.

Police said speed appeared to be a factor. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were involved.

This was the 21st traffic fatality of the year, compared to 25 last year.
