Hoops teams put HPU in Cup lead

With a strong finish from both its men's and women's basketball teams, Hawai'i Pacific University leads the Pacific West Conference Commissioner's Cup standings after the winter sports season.

HPU won the first PacWest women's title for a school from Hawai'i and the men had a third-place finish. Dixie State is second, Brigham Young-Hawai'i third and Grand Canyon fourth.

The bottom five are UH-Hilo, Notre Dame de Namur, Academy of Art, Dominican and Chaminade.

The Sea Warriors women's basketball team was 17-8 overall and 15-2 in the PacWest; the HPU men were 19-8 and 11-5.

Teams accumulate points for their schools according to their final league standing. The total points is then divided by the number of PacWest athletic programs the school offers and an average overall finish is calculated.

HPU's rate of 7.50 means the Sea Warriors are averaging better than a third-place finish in every sport.

UH-Hilo won the inaugural Commissioner's Cup in 2007-08 and BYUH captured the title last year.
