Auto racing: Rain pushes IRL race back to Monday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — IndyCar's Honda Grand Prix has been postponed until Monday morning because of heavy showers.

Rain began falling at the 1.8-mile street circuit just before 1 p.m. Sunday, and a band of strong storms arrived about 90 minutes later. Thunder and lightning followed, and Indy Racing League officials eventually decided not to race.

Driver Graham Rahal said on Twitter that the track had so much water that "you cannot see where the road stops."

Monday's event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The IRL said it would be televised on ESPN2.
