Figure skating: Canada's Rochette will skip worlds but will keep skating

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette says she is not ready for retirement.

Rochette finished third at the Vancouver Olympics four days after her mother died of a heart attack. The 24-year-old Canadian champ is skipping next week's world championships in Italy.

Rochette tells The Associated Press she wants to compete again, but she is not physically or mentally sharp enough for the worlds in Turin. She will skate in some ice shows because she says it would not be a "wise thing" now to make a complete break from the sport.

Her 55-year-old mother, Therese Rochette, died shortly after arriving in Vancouver last month to watch her daughter compete.
