North Shore lifeguards urge caution with big waves in forecast

Advertiser Staff

A high-surf advisory is in effect today for north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai and north-facing shores on Maui.

The National Weather Service says waves on Oahu’s North Shore will be in the 18- to 22-foot range. Surf on west-facing shores will be 12 to 15 feet.
City lifeguards are urging beachgoers to check with them before entering the water.
Bryan Cheplic of the city's Emergency Services Department says North Shore lifeguards are reporting 15- to 18-foot surf this morning.
"It's not unusual for March, but we haven't seen big surf in a few weeks, so the lifeguards just want to cautious," Cheplic said.
The weather service says it should be a breezy day, with trades of 15 mph to 24 mph with local gusts up to 35 mph.
There will be occasional morning showers and scattered showers in the afternoon and into the night.
