Advertiser Staff

The University of Southern California pounded out 17 hits — including nine for extra bases — and routed Hawaii, 12-2, this afternoon in nonconference baseball action.

The victory before a crowd of 2,310 at Les Murakami Stadium gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead in the four-game series and improved their overall record to 8-8. The Rainbows fell to 7-8 with their second straight loss.

USC took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI double by Matt Hart and Kevin Roundtree's run-scoring groundout to second. UH cut the lead in half on Kevin Macdonald's solo home run in the bottom of the frame, but the Trojans made it 4-1 in the third after Alex Glenn's sacrifice fly and Matt Foat's RBI double.

Kolten Wong's solo home run in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead in half again, but the Rainbows managed only three more hits the rest of the game.

Roundtree's solo home run made it 5-2 in the fourth, and a two-run double by Joe De Pinto made it 7-2 in the sixth. Southern Cal stretched it to 8-2 in the seventh, and added four more runs in the eighth on Ricky Oropesa's two-run double and Foat's two-run homer.
