Cancer expert visits University of Hawaii

Associated Press

HONOLULU — A Nobel prize winner and internationally renowned cancer expert is visiting the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.

Dr. Baruch Blumberg is expected to present scientific and public lectures while at the University of Hawaii center.
He’s also expected to present ideas to students and faculty to spur innovation in the islands.
The University of Pennsylvania professor was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1976 for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus.
He later developed the first vaccine for hepatitis B, a condition that can lead to liver cancer.
Hawaii has the highest incidence of liver cancer in the nation.
The University of Hawaii Foundation said Wednesday Blumberg’s visit is supported by the Weinman Foundation Fund for Innovation.
