Kapiolani Park closing from midnight to 5 a.m. as of today

Advertiser Staff

Starting today, all of Kapiolani Park will close from midnight to 5 a.m., city officials announced yesterday.

The section of Kapiolani Park makai of Kalakaua Avenue from Kapahulu Avenue to the War Memorial Natatorium used to close from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., the city said.

In the summer of 2008, more than 150 overnight campers — many of them homeless — could be counted in the park.

In 2008, the city passed a law that provided for a stricter definition of camping and banned overnight use of the park from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
