Aloha parking 'bids' go online

University of Hawai'i athletic department officials say they aren't sure what kind of a response to expect when the online "bidding" for rights to Aloha Stadium parking passes opens tomorrow at 8 a.m.

UH will conduct a "reverse auction" among season ticket holders to sell passes for approximately 1,800 coveted parking stalls for the 2010 football season.

It hopes to raise as much as $600,000 to help reduce an annual deficit that has been running at approximately $2 million per year.

UH said it will put up for bid nearly 800 stalls in the inner circle, 445 in the Koa lot and 555 in the Kamehameha Highway lot.

Prices will start at $400 for the inner circle, $350 for the Koa lot and $300 for the Kamehameha Highway area and be reduced by $50 per day until the allotment is sold.

The online page parking.KoAnuenue.org will display the number of passes remaining to be sold. UH previously mailed out details to eligible season ticket holders.

"We don't know how many (to expect) but there will definitely be a number of people who want to make sure they don't have to worry about it for the rest of the week," said Vince Baldemor, president of 'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the official booster organization.

The new format came after complaints about how sales were handled last year. Athletic director Jim Donovan said fans wanted more "transparency" to the process.

Proceeds from the sale of passes will help benefit the the scholarships program, Donovan said. A portion of the fee is tax deductible, UH said.

Passes may also be purchased through the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office in person or by phone, but UH said the fastest method is over the internet.
