Hiker is second this month to fall to his death in Makaha Valley

Honolulu Fire Department rescue units have recovered the body of a hiker reported missing in Makaha Valley yesterday. It was the second fatality due to a fall in Makaha Valley this month.

In the latest incident, the victim was hiking with a friend yesterday when he apparently fell 200 feet from a ledge near the Makaha Valley Tower Condominiums amid rain and cloud cover. The friend was able to make his way off the trail and call for help around 5:45 p.m.
A search was conducted last night but suspended around 10 p.m. due to darkness and poor weather conditions.
HFD units resumed their search at daybreak this morning and an rescue helicopter spotted the victim in an area about 200 yards makai of two water tanks on the mountain, about a quarter-mile from the condominiums, according to HFD spokesperson Earle Kealoha.
Rescue specialists were able to reach body of the man, who had suffered multiple injuries. He was transported by helicopter tot a command center established on Mauna Olu Place.
On Jan. 10, Garland English, a decorated platoon leader stationed at Schofield Barracks, fell 400 feet to his death while trying to retrieve some lost camping gear.
