Resolution accuses Hinshaw of unfair search for director

A University of Hawai'i-Mānoa Faculty Senate resolution accuses Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw of violating procedures in the search for a new Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i director.

The resolution approved last week says Hinshaw ignored policy in appointing Michele Carbone as interim director in 2008, thus providing him an unfair advantage in the subsequent search process for a permanent director.

The resolution says the search for a permanent director was not conducted in a manner that was fair, open or impartial.

The communications director in the chancellor's office, Diane Chang, said Carbone's appointment was appropriate.

Chang said under Carbone's leadership, the center is making great strides in recruiting strong cancer researchers and building its new facility.
