A newcomer and a new combination sparked Hawai'i to a three-set victory over Pacific last night in Spanos Center.

The scores were 30-21, 30-26, 30-22.

Opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft, a freshman from Germany, slammed a match-high 15 kills to give the Warriors a sweep of this two-match road series.

The Warriors improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Tigers are 4-4 and 0-4.

UH head coach Charlie Wade altered the lineup, starting Steven Hunt at left-side hitter and Brennan Dyer at middle blocker.

Gus Tuaniga, whom Hunt replaced, is considered to be the better passer. But Hunt has a more powerful swing and, in recent weeks, has developed into an accurate passer. Hunt had 10 kills and seven digs.

"I was kind of nervous going into (the match), but for the most part, I passed really well," Hunt said.

At 6 feet 4, Dyer is considered to be an under-sized middle. But he makes up for it with quickness. Although he was credited with one block, Dyer deflected many of Taylor Hughes' shots. Hughes finished with four kills and six errors.

"I think we're a better team than when we started this road trip," Wade said.
