No. 1 Texas upset on road

Associated Press

MANHATTAN, Kan. — More than 15 minutes after the final horn, thousands of Kansas State fans lingered in the stands to savor a hard-earned victory.

No floor-rushing celebrations, no hopping on the scorer's table, just a loud, sustained ovation.

Even against the nation's No. 1 team, Kansas State and its fans, many wearing fake beards in homage to high-scoring Jacob Pullen, expected to win.

Jamar Samuels scored 15 of his 20 points in a dominating first half and the 10th-ranked Wildcats withstood a rally to knock off top-ranked Texas, 71-62, last night.

"Teams rush floors when they do something phenomenal," said Kansas State forward Curtis Kelly, who had 17 points and eight rebounds against one of college basketball's best front lines. "It's flattering. They knew we were going to win. They didn't have to rush the floor because they believed in us."

Kansas State (16-2, 3-1 Big 12) smothered Texas (17-1, 3-0) with its extended man-to-man defense to overcome a 1-for-12 effort from 3-point range and held on to beat a No. 1 team for the third time in school history.

Texas shot 36 percent from the field, went 3 for 11 from 3-point range and hit just 9 of 22 at the free-throw line.

The Longhorns rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit with an early run in the second, but couldn't keep it going in their second week ever at No. 1, leaving No. 2 Kentucky (18-0) as the lone unbeaten team in Division I.

The Wildcats used a late 11-1 run to take control in their record 14th straight win at Bramlage Coliseum.

No. 5 Syracuse 84, Notre Dame 71: Wesley Johnson scored 22 points and Andy Rautins added 21 on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range to lead the Orange (18-1, 5-1) to their third Big East road win in six days by beating the host Irish (14-5, 3-3).

LOCAL DIVISION II MEN

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 83, HAWAI'I-HILO 82: C.J. Jackson had 27 points and 22 rebounds, and Mike Helton added 21 points as the visiting Sea Warriors (13-3, 5-0) beat the Vulcans (10-5, 4-1) in a Pacific West Conference game. HPU's Norman Wells hit a jumper to make it 83-80 Sea Warriors with 1:29 left. Hilo's Bryan Ngo made a field goal with 45 seconds left to cut the Vulcans' deficit to one. Hilo had possession with 11 seconds left, but missed two shots in the final seconds. Ray Murdock added 14 points and Wells had 11 for HPU. Ngo scored 24 points and Justin Smith added 18 for Hilo.

WOMEN'S TOP 25

No. 1 Connecticut 81, No. 6 Duke 48: Maya Moore scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half, and the Huskies (18-0) claimed their 57th straight victory by routing the host Blue Devils (15-3).

Boston U. 73, No. 24 Vermont 64: Freshman Chantell Alford scored a season-high 28 points and the host Terriers (9-8, 5-0 America East) ruined the Catamounts' (14-4, 4-1) first appearance in the AP poll in 17 years.

No. 25 Virginia 70, Virginia Tech 56: Monica Wright scored 27 points to lead the Cavaliers (12-5, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) to their seventh straight win over the host Hokies (11-6, 1-2).

LOCAL DIVISION II WOMEN

Hawai'i Pacific 63, Hawai'i-Hilo 55: Paris Gravely scored 12 points, and Genesis Lewis had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Sea Warriors (9-4, 5-0) over the host Vulcans (4-12, 1-4) in a Pacific West Conference game. Britni Ronolo added 10 points for HPU. Kirsty Imai had 15 points for Hilo.
