Farrington girls forfeit hoops game

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

A flash scuffle during postgame handshakes following Friday night's Castle-Farrington girls basketball game has resulted in a potential shakeup of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoff picture, both at the varsity and JV levels.

After an initial investigation late Friday night was inconclusive because of conflicting eyewitness reports, according to Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka, Governors coach Caroline Tatupu told Tanaka yesterday morning she decided to suspend the entire varsity and JV teams.

That resulted in a forfeit of last night's JV/varsity doubleheader at Roosevelt.

Defending OIA champion Farrington, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, is now tied with No. 7 Roosevelt atop the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division standings at 10-1.

Each team has one regular-season game remaining, and if they remained tied, a coin toss likely will determine the East's No. 1 seed for the league playoffs.

Last night's game was highly anticipated by both sides ever since their first-round meeting Jan. 8 ended with Farrington winning, 53-50, after Kirsten Liana's two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining.

The forfeit also resulted in subdued "Senior Night" festivities for Roosevelt, which had planned to honor its seniors with a postgame on-court ceremony. Instead, Rough Riders coach Hinano Higa said the team met at the school anyway for a short potluck dinner.

"I think we were all looking forward to the game more (than the festivities)," Higa said. "It's unfortunate."

For Moanalua's JV girls, the impact could be greater since Roosevelt's forfeit victory may cost Nā Menehune a chance at a playoff berth. Had Farrington (10-1) beaten Roosevelt (9-2), Moanalua (9-3) likely would have finished in a tie for second place with the Rough Riders, who end the regular season against Castle (6-5).

"We lost to Roosevelt the first time, but the girls played probably their best game of the season and beat them in the second round," Moanalua athletic director Joel Kawachi said. "I think they were excited thinking at least they had a chance to be in (the playoffs)."

At the JV level, only the top two teams in each division advance to the playoffs.

Farrington's varsity defeated Castle, 65-50, Friday night, but a two-player scuffle during the postgame handshakes resulted in a Castle player being struck in the mouth, drawing blood.

Tanaka said Tatupu decided to also suspend the JV team because "top to bottom, we're one team."
