Hawaii Family Forum rally set for tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Family Forum is organizing "Rally for Righteousness," from 2 to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the state Capitol, in support of "traditional family values" and encouraging voter turnout in upcoming elections.

The event is expected to include members of evangelical churches and the Hawaii Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu.

Dennis Arakaki, executive director of both organizations, said in a recent article in "The Hawaii Catholic Herald" that issues going before state lawmakers this year could include: same-sex marriage, civil unions, physician-assisted suicide, hunger, homelessness and gambling.

"We want to elect people who represent the values of the people," Arakaki said.

Participants are asked to wear white to the rally; bring canned goods and other nonperishable food items for donation to the Hawaii Food Bank; and fill out a voter's pledge card.

CELEBRATION TO EMBRACE LGBT COMMUNITY

"Celebrate The Dream: Standing For Love," an interfaith celebration and affirmation of the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Makiki.

The program, which features prayer, music, readings and a reception, is sponsored by Integrity Hawaii, an organization for gay Episcopalians; The Interfaith Alliance, which advocates for religious freedom and individual rights; and Equality Hawaii, which advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in state.

The event is a chance to "welcome, embrace and stand up for the LGBT community in its efforts seeking equality and justice," said Keola Akana, Integrity Hawaii's board secretary. It will also celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of equality.

For more information, call the church, 955-7745.
