State seeks bids for $125 million of roadway work

Advertiser Staff

State Transportation Director Brennon Morioka this morning announced that two major transportation improvement projects are being put out to bid — one the creation of an afternoon contra-flow lane on H-1 Freeway through the Aiea-Pearl City corridor, and the other, completion of another segment of the Lahaina bypass road.

Costs are estimated at about $75 million for the contra-flow lane and $50 million for the Lahaina bypass segment.
But because work has been very scarce for Hawaii construction workers due to the slumping economy over the past year or so, bids on the two projects are expected to be “very favorable,” Morioka said.
The Highways Division of the state Department of Transportation expects to pick contractors for the two projects by the middle of this year.
