Behind an impressive balancing act and opportunistic defense, Moanalua held off visiting Kalāheo, 59-47, last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball opener for both teams.

Nā Menehune led 27-9 at halftime despite leading scorers Marcus Monroe and Josiah Kauhola saddled with two fouls each and combining for just five points. Six other players, led by Kevin Amaral (nine points), got into the scoring column as Moanalua jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one period and then extended it to an 18-point margin in the second.

"When the game gets faster and we're able to create a tempo, that's when we get everybody involved," Nā Menehune coach Greg Tacon said. "We want the game to be wide open; we don't want Marcus to have to be the leading scorer every night."

After the Mustangs cut the lead to 8-4 on Jordan Reindollar's layup with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter, Moanalua responded with a 16-1 run that lasted until three minutes before halftime.

In addition to the balanced scoring, Nā Menehune held Kalāheo's leading scorer, Aaron Fernandez, to only five points on two field goals in the first half. They did it with pressure defense that often created turnovers before Fernandez even got the ball, and when he did get it, Moanalua made sure he did not get open looks.

Fernandez was 1 for 5 from the free-throw line in the first half.

"We just had to know where he was at all times," Tacon said. "We were not going to box-and-1 him; we defended him within our basic scheme, and it worked fairly well because he had to work hard for his points."

Nā Menehune stretched the lead to 48-22 by the closing moments of the third period, and the closest the Mustangs got in the fourth was 58-47 after two free throws by Bryson Anoba with 28 seconds left.

"We were 3 of 14 from the field in the first half and the same from the free-throw line," Kalāheo coach Chico Furtado said. "That's a lack of concentration and discipline. We're young as far as court experience, and that's part of the maturation process. But I think Moanalua is the best team in the league, so I liked the way our guys fought back after being down 26."
