Hawaii’s first baby of the year — and decade — was born 12:07 this morning at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Ethyn Adrian Torres was born to Salvador Torres Jr., 20, and Claudia Torres, 18, of Kaneohe Marine Corps Base and formerly of Chicago. Ethyn, a boy, weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 20 inches long.
The couple said after learning of their first child’s distinction, they thought it was a joke.
“It’s amazing,” Claudia Torres said, smiling and cradling her swaddled newborn. “It’s like, wow, we didn’t really think it would happen, but he’s here.”
