The Pahua Heiau sits in the middle of a Hawai'i Kai neighborhood as a testament to how historical culture continues to survive. Kevin Chang, the O'ahu conservation land manager for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, says he hopes the heiau can stimulate discussion on Hawaiian cultural values and sustainability. As a 2009 TogetherGreen fellow, Chang received $10,000 for a community-focused project that engages residents in conservation of land, water and energy and contributes to greater environmental health. An information sharing session on how this relates to the heiau will be held in Hawai'i Kai on Thursday. Call 864-8081 for details on the location and to reserve a seat.

EXPERT TO LEAD 2 CLASSES

Stephen Ashkin, founder of the Green Cleaning Network and an expert consultant on environmentally sensitive cleaning products, will lead two "green cleaning" classes next month, presented by The Professional Cleaning Institute of Hawai'i. Ashkin will outline an approach for creating a comprehensive green cleaning plan, for homes, facilities or public places. Also to be discussed will be the U.S. Green Building Council's green rating system — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED — for existing buildings. The classes are scheduled 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. March 4 and 5 in the Ala Moana Pacific Center, suite 1740. Each class costs $95. For information or registration, call 944-8255.
