Boxing: Yankee Stadium cleared for proposed fight

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Boxing is one step closer to returning to Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees said Friday that they've reached an accommodation with a family that scheduled a bar mitzvah for June 5, clearing the way for a proposed fight between junior middleweight champ Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto at the opulent ballpark.

The bar mitzvah is for Scott Ballan, the son of the lead bond lawyer for the financing of Yankee Stadium. It wasn't clear what accommodations were made.

Bob Arum has been trying to bring another fight to Yankee Stadium for years. He promoted the last one at the old ballpark in 1976, when Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton against the backdrop of a police strike.

The Foreman-Cotto fight has not been finalized, but both sides have said they want the fight.
