News that a new Ranch House restaurant has opened (at 449 Kapahulu Ave., above Hee Hing) prompts us to ask:
• Do you remember Spencecliffe's old Ranch House, in 'Aina Haina, which operated from the 1950s to 1987? Did you go there often? Did you find hidden treasures? What are your memories? We plan a little tribute to the original Ranch House and would appreciate hearing from you. E-mail us: taste@honoluluadvertiser.com. Weigh in at http://www.myislandplate.honadvblogs.com. Or write Island Life/Ranch House Memories, 605 Kapi'olani Blvd., Honolulu, HI 96813.

VALLEY ISLE HAPPENINGS

MONTHLY EVENTS TARGET KIDS, ADULTS

On Maui, chef David Paul Johnson of David Paul's Island Grill in Lahaina is up to here in projects. The restaurant is hosting monthly private chef tables in the kitchen. They're doing monthly winemaker dinners; in February, it's Cakebread Cellars and, in March, Morgan Cellars. He has launched the DIVA program, which benefits the Women Helping Women program with monthly themed dinners; this month, the restaurant is offering incentives to those who donate to Women Helping Women.

And, mindful of how furlough Fridays are affecting families, he has partnered with Whaler's Village to produce a monthly event to involve children in cooking, with simplified chef demonstrations and a chance for kids to learn cooking techniques hands-on. The first one is Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Village, and it's free. Call the restaurant for information: 808-662-3000.
