HILO, Hawaii — A Big Island woman accused of causing a traffic accident that claimed the life of a 17-month-old girl has been indicted on eight charges, including drunken driving, manslaughter and negligent homicide.

Police say Valereen Kaleohano-Knittle’s pickup truck ran a red light in Kailua, Kona last May 23 and crashed into a car carrying Aliyah Braden. Aliyah was killed and her 25-year-old mother, Mayvelyn Braden, was critically injured.
At the time of the accident, mother and daughter were on their way to a play date at Fun Factory.
Bail for the 50-year-old Kaleohano-Knittle was set at $300,000.
Kaleohano-Knittle’s defense attorney, Robert J. Crudele, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
