Faculty resolution opposes closing of marine laboratory

Advertiser Staff

A plan by University of Hawai'i-Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw to close the Kewalo Marine Laboratory is being opposed by a UH Faculty Senate resolution.

The group says Hinshaw is following the advice of Vice Chancellor Gary Ostrander.

The resolution approved last week asks Ostrander to step down as interim director of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center.

Ostrander is standing by his advice, saying he has to do what he thinks is right and best for the university and its obligation to the residents of Hawai'i.

He said the UH prioritization committee and other groups also recommended closing the Kewalo facility.

The Faculty Senate resolution says some information presented in support of closing the Kewalo lab is incorrect, exaggerated or presented in a false light.
