Jamie O'Brien of O‘ahu's North Shore won the Volcom Pipeline Pro men's surfing contest today.

The semifinals and final were completed Monday morning in wave-face heights of 10- to 15-feet at the Banzai Pipeline.

O'Brien, who lives in a house directly in front of the Pipeline waves, received $16,000 for the victory.

O'Brien took the lead midway through the 45-minute final and then held on in the closing minutes when the ocean went shockingly flat.

"I love Pipeline," O'Brien said. "I kind of talk to it out there, it's kind of funny. People might think I'm crazy, but I was sort of praying it would go flat at the end."

O'Brien finished with a two-wave score of 17.0. Anthony Walsh of Australia placed second with a score of 14.87.

Another Australian, Mark Mathews, finished third with 14.14 points. Kaua‘i's Danny Fuller was fourth with 12.16.

The Volcom Pipeline Pro offered points on surfing's World Qualifying Series. It also helped Hawai‘i surfers qualify for the Billabong Pipeline Masters later this year.
