Advertiser Staff

Michael Turay drove in three runs and Cullen Mahoney scored three as Nevada drubbed Hawai'i 8-4 tonight to take the opener of the four-game Western Athletic Conference series before 1,985 at Les Murakami Stadium.

Lefthander Chris Garcia (5-2) allowed a run, five hits and four walks with a season-high nine strikeouts in seven innings for Nevada (23-15-1 overall, 4-4-1 WAC).

Josh Slaats had his shortest outing of the season, lasting just two-plus innings, allowing six runs, three hits and four walks with three strikeouts for UH (21-21, 4-9).

The Wolf Pack got on the board first in the second inning. With one out, Brian Barnett walked and Cullen Mahoney was hit by a pitch. Kamehameha alumnus Waylen Sing Chow doubled to right-center to score Barnett and send Mahoney to third. Garrett Yrigoyen's liner to center bounced over center fielder Collin Bennett for a two-run triple. Michael Turay's ground-rule double to right-center made it 4-0.

Hawai'i got run in the bottom of the second. Jeffrey Van Doornum led off with a single and Bennett walked. After Greg Garcia was called out on strikes, Kevin Macdonald's RBI single pulled UH to 4-1.

The Wolf Pack added three in the third. Shaun Kort led off with a walk and Nick Melino walked after falling behind 0-2. Slaats was pulled for Alex Capaul, who gave up a single to Barnett to load the bases. Mahoney's RBI single reloaded the bases before Sing Chow struck out. Yrigoyen grounded to first for a force at the plate to reload the bases to set up Turay's two-run ground-rule double to right-center to make it 7-1.

The Wolf Pack got another run in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by Kevin Rodland to make it 8-1.

Jayson McClaren started the eighth inning for starter Chris Garcia and struck out the first two batters he faced. But then Bennett singled and Garcia walked. Macdonald's RBI single moved Garcia to second. Pinch hitter Sean Monplaisir's two-run triple to center pulled UH to 8-4. On the play, center fielder Westley Moss crashed into the wall, but remained in the game after being down for several minutes. McClaren was replaced by Jesse Rasner, who got Chase Koissian to ground out to short on a 3-0 count to end the threat.
